As many of us know, our bodies have a bad habit of collecting surplus energy as fat and then depositing in places which can come to look pretty distressing. As we age, our bodies also tend to favour certain parts of the body – hips and thighs, belly “love handles” area, double chins and so-on – which can become fairly enlarged. For many people, the traditional approach to removing these fatty deposits has been used either face-lifts or liposuction. Both of these, however, involve invasive treatments and carry the risks of all surgical procedures.
Ultrasound Cavitation is a relatively new treatment which uses ultrasonic waves travelling in high-speed cycles. The waves travel back and forth, creating micro-cavities within the fat layers – this is cavitation. As these cavities expand, they cause the fats to emulsify, which is to say that they break down into a mixture of oily and watery fluids. This fluid can then be collected by the body’s own natural processes that drain the lymphatic and urinary system – over about the next five days after treatment, the body eliminates this waste naturally.
To achieve this outcome, your therapist will use a special handpiece which is applied to your skin. The handpiece emits the ultrasonic waves to begin the process of fat removal. It is important to be aware that cavitation is not a weight-loss process; it is designed to reduce problems such as cellulite and to change the shape of your body into contours which are more pleasing.
Generally, one fat cavitation treatment takes thirty-five to forty minutes and focuses on a single area of the body. It is recommended that clients allow at least five days for the natural elimination of the waste materials, so at Unique we strongly suggest that clients limit themselves to weekly intervals between treatments. The number of sessions will depend on the number of areas to treat and the degree of fat build-up.
People with cardiac and vascular diseases, pacemaker carriers and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid undergoing the procedure
Radiofrequency (RF) energy is a related technique used for skin tightening. At Unique we have prepared a separate information sheet on RF skin tightening but it is worth noting here that this also a non-surgical intervention which may be combined with cavitation in order to tighten skin tissue in areas where cavitation has produced fat loss. RF treatment is often used to treat the forehead, under the eyes, cheeks, mid-face, jaw line and the neck.
